Increasing Metabolism Naturally
Increasing metabolism…
Sounds great! Well, the easiest, most natural way to do that is to gain weight. Higher weight = higher metabolism. That’s the easiest advice to follow on this website (if you found this site, which means you’ve probably gained more weight then you wanted already).
A more helpful suggestion is to increase your muscle mass by using strength training. It takes a lot of effort for your body to build muscle, and a lot of effort to maintain muscle. Each pound of muscle you have takes at least 14 calories a day (you can find sources to quote you higher)… each pound of fat takes 4 calories to maintain. someone with 100 pounds of extra fat gets to eat 400 calories a day, just to maintain that awesome gut. Since you probably don’t particularly care to maintain said gut, you’re going to have to stop feeding it – but once it’s gone, that 400 calories you could have eaten to feed your fat can no longer be consumed, or it will just build itself back into more fat. It’s a tricky part of weight loss – hopefully you’ve been building crazy muscle to take the place so you can still eat a fair bit.

Often times eating smaller meals more often is listed as a way to naturally boost your metabolism. I don’t personally think the effect is worth it, but it’s recommended by many, many people.
Working out in the morning is a good way to get all the hormones flowing in your body, telling it to burn fat for energy… these keep floating around, helpfully – from the moment you wake up, if that’s when you work out. They’ll still be chugging along no matter when you work out – but you’ll lull them back to sleep along with you if you work out in the evening.
Eating high levels of protein is tough for your body – in a great, metabolism-boosting way. Think of it like the old myth of ‘negative calorie’ foods – it takes more power to chew the celery then you’re getting out of it! But this isn’t a myth – it does take energy to process every single bit of food you eat. You don’t get to count it against your calories – “oo 1/10 of this delicious french bread is going to be used to digest the rest, i’ll have another 1/10 to reward myself for the exercise’ (hehe). But fats and carbs do take about 1/10 of the calories taken in to digest them… but proteins take 30 percent! Thats a lot less calories for the calories by the time it balences out – which means you’ve sped up your metabolism by eating more protein. The muscles it helps build help too.
And… drink your water! It’s good for you and speeds up your metabolism. You can burn 50 calories per glass of iced water to digest. Drink water on an empty stomach – your body works harder to warm it, and then even harder to absorb it! (alcohol mysteriously does not work in the same way).
Hopefully these tips help you out in thinking about raising your metabolism on an everyday basis! (Here’s an easier tip – exercise lots!)
