Healthy Weight Loss Plan – chose the right one

Recommended Simple Diet program

You can come up with hundreds of different ways to get thinner.  You do, however, need to evaluate whether what you’re looking at is a healthy weight loss plan.  Weight loss plans can be focused on diet or exercise, or ideally both – but make sure they aren’t in some loony-land.

If an idea is particularly ‘out there’, it doesn’t need to be dismissed off hand, but carefully check the science behind it.  If there aren’t studies to back it up, and it’s being promoted by someone with no background in fitness, maybe you should reconsider the plan.  Even professionals though probably have some axe to grind – so make sure they aren’t coming at you, trying to get you to buy specific supplements from their company or upgrade constantly.  Not that these plans necessarily have no merit, but don’t jump into something that tries to get you to spend more then you can afford.

Make sure the diet recommended is balanced.  Extreme diets from all over the spectrum exist – make sure you are being asked to eat at least 1200 calories per day over the course of a week (anything less then that should be undertaken with direct doctor’s supervision only).  If the macronutrient levels are way off (shun carbs, shun fats, shun protein), investigate the claims thoroughly  and watch yourself on the diet to make sure your body can adapt to the diet.  Single-food diets are not sustainable!

Ideally the diet will be one you can see sticking to for a long time.   Anything excessively complicated or overly restrictive will not fit into your life forever.  Do a more extreme diet if you have an urgent need for weight loss, but have a plan for transitioning back out gradually and adjusting to a maintenence way of thinking about your weight.   Simply stopping a diet and reverting to old habits will bring back your old results – being overweight.

When looking at a workout, again the healthy plan will be one you can stick to for a long time.  Do know that muscle building efforts are normally more intense at the beginning to get you to a level of muscle that will help you in your weight loss efforts – but if you know you’re only willing to spend and hour or two on working out a week, look for a plan that will accomodate that.  Generally exercise plans are healthy – your body is designed to move!  But if you are leaping into a plan with weights without proper guidance, you could seriously injure yourself – follow the guides closely – look online at youtube or in a muscle building forum for more instruction if you’re not sure of technique.  The same goes for cardio, to a lesser extent – and follow the warnings to check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program!

It is certainly possible to pick out a healthy weight loss plan.  Be skeptical of crazy claims, and check out these programs especially closely for good science and healthy nutrition.  I have a number of reviews for plans I’ve found to be both effective and healthy on this site, check them out and see if any of them might be right for you.  Congratulations on deciding to lose weight that’s making you unhealthy, and best of luck to you!
